afternoon. good afternoon, everyone, i'm jim handly. >> i'm pat lawson muse. we begin with police searching for a man with a shotgun and a hammer. >> news4's tracee wilkins joins us live from the scene with the latest. trace see, what can you tell us? is. >> the parkway is open again, lots of commuters happy about that. traffic is moving freely, but for hours, more than three hours, the parkway was shut down while they looked for a suspect. let me show you the vehicle that's at the center of this investigation. it was a white jeep, parked on the side of this construction zone. the purpose of that jeep, it was there to actually catch speeders coming through the work zone. they had a contracted worker sitting inside of that jeep, and that was his job. as he was doing that today, some strange man walked up and banged on the back windshield of his vehicle with a shotgun. then police say the man then approached the front of the jeep, and began banging on the front windshield with a hammer
4:01 pm
until he broke the windshield, putting at least two holes in the front windshield there. the worker crawled out, got over to the side of the jeep, protected himself as the man began to yellin coherently, and as quickly as he appeared, he disappeared back into the woods. according to police, he never fired that shotgun. the worker was not hurt. there were people who were coming down the bw parkway and saw all of this happening, calling police. some of them actually pulled over into the side of the road and then spoke with police about what they saw, so they have some additional witnesses. but, again, never found that suspect. they're saying now that that man is still, they believe, somewhere in the area, but they did feel that it was okay for them to go ahead and open up 295. they had more than 50 officers out here from three different police departments searching for this suspect. they're saying that it just does not appear that he is immediately in the 295 corridor any longer, but, again, they are still looking out for him. and asking folks who possibly see this man to give police a call. they say he is a white male,

4:03 pm
prosecutor jeff ashton fears will never be revealed. >> no, we never will. we never will. because even if -- even if casey got out of jail and wrote a book and said it, i don't know that any of us would really know if we could believe it or not. >> justice for caylee! >> reporter: just as hard for many to believe is how the jury reached its decision. so far, none of the active jurors has spoken publicly since the verdict, but an alternate is now providing some insight. >> the prosecution didn't present the evidence that would have sustained either a murder charge or a manslaughter charge. >> reporter: as casey anthony now prepares for sentencing on the four guilty counts of providing false information to law officers and the real possibility that tomorrow she could be free for the first time in three years, the questions have turned to what comes next. right now, she has everything she ever wanted. she's going to have money, she's going to have people at her doorstep asking for her, wanting her, and she's going to have that partying lifestyle that she
4:04 pm
so craved. >> reporter: while there continues to be speculation about television interviews, movie and book deals, ex-fiance jesse grunt feels certain a next chapter in anthony's life will not include a trip home. this afternoon, her parents, george and cindy, were seen leaving the house with a police escort. >> there's no way casey goes back to that household. cindy and casey have had an adversarial relationship the entire time caylee has been alive. >> reporter: just like the trial that unfolded more than six weeks here, so many are still wondering what comes next. >> we should learn a lot more about that tomorrow morning, when casey anthony is back before judge belvin perry here at the orange county courthouse. in orlando, jay gray, news4. >> so much activity on facebook. almost blew a fuse. the twitter-verse erupted, all filled with opinions on that not guilty verdict. >> and we wanted to know what you thought about the verdict on our facebook page. nbc washington results are still pouring in this afternoon. here are just a few of them. julio rodriguez posted, talk

4:07 pm
the recession until fairly far into it, maybe two or three months into my presidency, where we started realizing that we had lost 4 million jobs before i was even sworn in. >> the president also says the continuing decline in the housing market hasn't bottomed out yet, as quickly as he expected. he says that's been a big drag on the economy. the new head of the international monetary fund held her first news conference today. christine la guard was elected after a sex crimes arrest forced dominique strauss-kahn to resign. >> now, you might be surprised that i'm here so soon after my election. i thought it was necessary to come back to d.c. very promptly, simply because there are many issues that need to be addressed. and those issues cannot wait for yet another summer holiday. so here i am. and for good. >> christine lagarde is the first woman to lead the imf. she is a former french finance

4:17 pm
i hate 41 hot dogs in 2009. then i couldn't do it after that. at coney island, i ate 34, 35, that's it. and then this year i made it to 40. i was so happy. >> you surprised yourself. >> and it was so comfortable, too. >> now, joey chestnut won for the fifth straight year. can anyone beat him? >> right now, no. because i can beat him at some other different kind of food. >> wings. i think we've got some video of you with wings. >> yes. my specialty is wings, especially. the hot dog is not my best food. but i can do it, but not -- i cannot, you know, compete -- >> and what's your favorite food? when you're just having a meal, how much do you eat, and how do you stay so thin? >> yeah, regularly, maybe when i go to the -- normally i go to restaurant, all you can eat. >> so you have a healthy appetite. >> yes, because i like to eat

4:20 pm
within 20 seconds. now it's down at 27 seconds. unbelievable. i think she is ready for more questions. so when you do this, this is an annual thing. she is ready for another question, look. it has disappeared like a vacuum cleaner. >> we asked you earlier if you're hungry for hot dogs. you still like to eat those. >> oh, yeah. but it's a little bit harder eating hot dogs, but next day, i'm hungry for eating hot dogs. >> and you do take pepto-bismol. >> after, yes. >> not just the sponsor, but it works. >> every year, yes, they do take it, yeah. >> here's to you. >> thank you. >> champion hot dog eater. >> we have cake in our newsroom, too, for dessert. so great to see you, and congrats. >> thank you. >> thank you. and coming up next on news4 at 4:00, celebration in the streets after the olympic bid

4:26 pm
the heat index, 92 degrees right now. it is very warm, it is very humid out there. and even though the temperatures are below 90 in most locations, we are dealing with the heat index above 90. but look back to the west where we have seen some sunshine. winchester at 90 degrees. 91 in martinsburg, 09 in hagers town. 80 baltimore. 78 leonardtown. 79 in freds rehabilitationburg. as far as the rain is concerned, well down to our south. southern portions of st. mary's county, that's really it. eastern shore may see a couple more showers, parts of the northern neck, but that's really it this evening. i do expect, though, the rain to return tomorrow. and it all has to do with that same front that's just been sitting down to our south over the last couple days. there is richmond. richmond has been pummeled today with a lot of rain. and that's what we could see tomorrow. some areas tomorrow could see very heavy downpours all along that frontal boundary. and then we'll watch yet another front move down during the day tomorrow and into friday. friday could even be wetter, and i think friday, just about
4:27 pm
everybody could see at least some rain as the area of low pressure forms along that frontal boundary, it will be warm, humid, but not quite as warm as i think temperatures will be held down on friday because of the cloud cover. this evening, partly cloudy, quite humid, 86 to 82 degrees as temperatures will be falling. tomorrow morning, mostly clear, warm and humid. 67 to about 74 degrees, a very warm start to our thursday as we move on through the day on friday. 87 to 9 2 degrees, partly sunny, hot and humid with scattered showers lightly. you may not get one, but i would be surprised if maybe just a couple down the miles down the road it was raining heavy. 84 on friday as we cool things down a little bit. 06% chance of rain. and then look at this weekend, saturday and sunday, right now, looking great. a little bit lower in the way of humidity. temperatures still upper 80s to around 90 degrees. so for the forecast, the weekend is looking awesome. >> thank you, dow. still to come at news4 at 4:00, the final flight on "atlantis" is in serious
4:28 pm
jeopardy. we'll tell you why.

4:45 pm
the airport actually had to shut down for some areas. visibility was reduced to near zero in some locations. that, my friends, is simply nasty. wow. as far as our weather is concerned, i could look at that all day long, that's how amazing that video is. this is a better shot, though, as far as our weather out there. we're looking at partly cloudy to mostly sunny skies in parts of the region. temperatures right now, 85 degrees, but the heat index right now at 92. those winds out of the south-southeast at 12 miles per hour. things are very moist. we are very humid this afternoon. look at the temperatures, 90 in hagerstown, 91 in winchester. but to the south and east, cooler. 84 in clinton, 83 in la plata. i say cooler, but watch what happens when you add in the humidity, you get the heat index and look at the heat index right now. it is 92 in the district, 91 in clinton, 91 in manassas, 95 in culpeper and 93 towards martinsburg, so a very warm afternoon and we're going to continue to see that hot and humid conditions right through the next couple days.
4:46 pm
